Addis Ababa · Ethiopia

Hire a sound designer in Addis Ababa.

Sound is the half of video that audiences notice only when it is wrong — and the half almost every Ethiopian production budget forgets until the edit is locked. It is also the cheapest place to buy a large jump in perceived quality.

What a sound designer actually does

Records clean audio on location, or fixes what was recorded.

These are two different jobs. A location sound recordist prevents the problem; a post-production sound designer repairs it, and repair is always more expensive and less good.

Mixes so it works on a phone speaker.

Almost all of your audience in Addis will hear this on a phone, often outdoors. A mix that only holds up on headphones has failed.

Builds atmosphere, effects and music beds.

Room tone, foley, transitions and the music decision. This is what makes a corporate video feel expensive.

What to ask for before you book

How pricing works

Sound is quoted per shoot day for location recording, and per finished minute or per project for post-production. It is a small enough line item relative to camera and edit that skipping it is almost never the right saving.

Rather than publish a rate card we cannot stand behind, we would rather you saw the real numbers: what creative work actually costs in Ethiopia is built from budgets posted on this platform, and it says how many.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need a separate sound person?

For anything with dialogue, yes. On-camera microphones are adequate for atmosphere and inadequate for someone speaking. It is the single highest-return addition to a small crew.

Can bad audio be fixed afterwards?

Some of it. Noise, hum and level problems can often be improved. Echo from a hard-walled room and clipped distortion largely cannot — those are recorded into the file permanently.

What about music — can they supply it?

Many sound designers have licensed libraries or compose. Establish in writing that you have commercial rights to whatever is used, especially for anything running as advertising.

Is sound design relevant for podcasts?

Very. Editing, levelling and a consistent mix are most of what separates a podcast people finish from one they abandon in the first minute.
